- For interactive inhabitants, see Characters.
Creatures are non-interactive mobs in Darkwood, many of which have been afflicted with the Plague. Physical violence is usually the only interaction the player may have with them.
In all difficulties except Nightmare, every time the player dies, the creatures found in random places that were previously killed either by the player or other causes respawn at a different area. The ones found in specific locations, however, never respawn. Creatures that spawn in the hideout during the night phase despawn when the morning arrives, along with their corpses and, if any, unlooted contents inside.
These inhabitants of the woods exhibit different types of behavior, consisting of four types: aggressive, carnivorous, passive, and peaceful.
Aggressive Creatures[]
Aggressive creatures are extremely dangerous and will attack the player or other creatures on sight. Most of them may also come to assail the player in the hideout at night.

Carnivorous Creatures[]
Carnivorous creatures (officially called "Carnivores") are mostly aggressive and especially attracted to Meat or the Protagonist's flesh. They can be lured by a bait before engaging but may not be distracted by a new bait on the ground while targeting their prey. In other words, throwing a bait while being chased may not cause the carnivores to disengage.
Multiple carnivores can all be simultaneously attracted to the same bait.

Passive Creatures[]
Passive creatures do not engage unless provoked through staying within their view for a couple seconds, approaching up-close or attacking. Most of them will display some form of reaction serving as a warning when detecting something in sight, so caution is advised when encountering them.
Some of them may appear near the hideout at night as aggressive creatures.

Peaceful Creatures[]
Peaceful creatures, under no circumstances, attack or actively cause harm to others, and they either flee from anything on sight or ignore them altogether. Several of them possess severely low health, capable of being dispatched by a single stone while few others are invulnerable to all forms of attacks. A couple of them can be considered a type of interactive scenery as they cannot move and have some sort of impact on the game world.
Some of them may pose indirect danger to the player at certain areas or at the hideout during the night.

Trivia[]
- As of Alpha 7.0, some enemies have dynamic difficulty scaling in relation to the player's progress. Many other small rebalancings to creature stats have been added throughout game versions, most of which are unspecified.
- Other creatures besides the ones present in this list can be found in the game files. As their presence in the game is unconfirmed, to be added in future updates, or cut content, they are not being featured here.
