The Dry Meadow Hideout is a major location in Darkwood located in the Dry Meadow. It is the first one of four available Hideouts the Protagonist makes use of.

Appearance[]

The Dry Meadow Hideout has four separate rooms in total, with several pieces of furniture and accessories in them. The layout of the rooms changes every playthrough. A Well and a small shack housing the hideout's Generator is also present outside, but it is unsecure, since one of its walls is broken down.

Inside the house there is one large wardrobe which contains one Rag, 11 Nails and the Photo of a Road, and a smaller one containing the Mushroom Book, a Rope, two empty Bottles and two bottles of Alcohol.

Inside the small shack with the Generator there is an unidentified Corpse, which contains a Torch in mid condition, a Rag, and some Matchsticks. Additionally, a Generator Note can be found on the floor right next to the generator.

A broken Well, which can be repaired with 4 Boards, can be found right outside the front door. The player can drink from the repaired Well once per day to restore some health.

A locked stash can be found outside, at the back of the house. It was originally meant exclusively for early backers on Indiegogo, however the code is always the same and can now be easily found online. It contains two cans of Gasoline, an Exploding Barrel, a Single-shot Pistol, two Rope, a Fabric, a Knife, five Scrap Metal, ten Boards and thirty five Nails.

Outside of the front door, there is additionaly an empty pile of timber, which can be used as extra storage space.

Strategy[]

Workbenchroom

Easily defendable, the workbench room is the ideal place to wait out the night. Block each entrance with furniture and ready your weapon.

Strategy 1[]

The room with the Workbench (i.e. the workshop) is a good place for waiting out the night. It is small enough to be easy to defend while leaving a decent amount of space for moving around and jucking enemies. Additionally one of the two windows is already barricaded so you don't have to waste resources on barricading it yourself. If you decide to use this room for the night:

  • Barricade the second window, you can also use bear traps under each window for the enemies to get trapped when they come in. They might not be as usefull in the first hideout though due to the low level and spawn rate of the enemies, it might be better to keep them for later use.
  • Repair the door to the room adjacent to the workshop (i.e. the entrance room) and use the stool to block it, it will slow down any potential enemies and give you enough time to prepeare to fight.
  • Drag both of the lamps inside the workshop, but make sure that the light is not coming out through the barricaded windows since it will draw in enemies.
  • Use the two pieces of furniture found in the hideout to block each door from the outside of the workshop, early enemies rarely break the objects so it will increase your chance of survival.

Strategy 2[]

The small room next to the workshop (i.e. the entrance room) is another good option. It can be very easily blocked off with furniture and made almost impassable by enemies. It is a good spot for any players wanting an effortless night. The only real flaw to this setup is the lack of space for effective combat maneuvering, in case of any enemies who manage to pass through, and avoiding events, making it easy to get cornered. It also lacks the Workbench so you won't be able to get any additional items during the night. If you decide to use this room for the night:

  • Repair the doorway that leads to the entrance room.
  • Block all the entrances to the room with all of the available furniture.
  • Drag both of the lamps inside the entrance room.

Tips[]

The large wardrobe can serve both as a storage locker for items as well as an invaluable barricade to block off open doorways. However, it's not unbreakable, and repeated enemy assault will destroy it.

Due to the low intensity of enemies in this hideout, after getting comfortable in combat, luring enemies with an unbarricaded window and hitting them while they are vaulting can be a great strategy to survive and grind usefull items.

Trivia[]

Contamination

Worms infesting the Hideout, as seen in a screenshot from before Alpha 6.0. Note the crate, which has since been replaced by a small wardrobe.

  • Prior to Alpha 6.0, Worms would appear in this hideout. They are now introduced to the player in the Entrance to Silent Forest location.
  • This hideout used to feature a "very trippy" glitch on its bed, which was fixed in Alpha 1.1. The developers stated that it could be re-added as an intentional feature in the future.
  • It is possible to jam the large wardrobe into the hole in the main building so that it cannot be moved from the outside. Though it can still be broken, enemies that invade the Dry Meadow Hideout usually don't break objects, effectively patching the hole.
  • With the supplies from the locked stash, a lot of gameplay testing can be done at the start of the game.
