The Pistol is a firearm requiring Small Caliber Magazines to be reloaded (press R). Each magazine holds 8 rounds.

Like other ranged weapons, it does not suffer durability loss. Rather, its "durability meter" represents how many bullets it has left, going down with each shot. Any rounds remaining in the pistol are lost when loading in a fresh magazine.

The Pistol can be crafted with a level 4 Workbench, along with the Homemade Shotgun. Note that it is fully loaded with 8 rounds upon being crafted. A Pistol can also be obtained for free by giving the Electronic Game to Wolfman. However, this is only possible after entering the Old Woods.

Strengths and Weaknesses[]

The Pistol is the weakest firearm of the game in terms of per-shot damage, although four shots will inflict approximately the same damage that a shot from the Hunting Rifle would. The Pistol can kill a Red Chomper in five shots and an Elk with a full magazine.

However, that is not to imply that damage is the appeal of this weapon; the strength of the Pistol lies in its utility and efficiency. The eight rounds contained in a Pistol magazine allows the protagonist to efficiently pick off enemies without 'wasting' damage potential. Further, the low per-bullet cost of firing the Pistol (12.5 reputation per bullet) makes the pistol suitable for detonating Explosive Barrels and Gas Tanks.

With that said, the real weakness of the Pistol is the time it takes to kill an enemy. Whereas the Hunting Rifle will quickly kill a Huge Dog with only a single shot, it takes successive shots with the Pistol to accomplish the same task. This means the Pistol is ill-suited to engaging multiple enemies at once - as a second enemy will be free to advance while the protagonist is occupied firing at one enemy.

Due to the sheer utility of the Pistol in efficiently picking off enemies along with the abundance of its ammunition, this weapon sees frequent use from the moment it is unlocked until the end of the game.

Trivia[]

  • It is important to note that the value of a crafted Pistol is significantly less than the value of its individual parts. Therefore, it is generally more profitable to sell surplus Handgun Frames by themselves, assuming that the player has already obtained a Pistol through crafting or events.
